Each spring nearly 80 of the top spellers from Nebraska and western Iowa earn the right to compete in the Omaha World-Herald Midwest Spelling Bee by winning their county or district bees. The winner of the Midwest Spelling Bee receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C to compete against champion spellers from across the country in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The Omaha World-Herald has been the primary sponsor since 1929.
- College World Series
For more than 50 years, the newspaper has been a major sponsor of the College World Series in Omaha. This nationally televised event brings more than 200,000 fans to the city each year.
- World-Herald Fireworks Night
